 Colonialism in Africa

Colonialism (1876-1956)
Colonialism the control by one power over a dependent people. To colonize is to posses something that may or may not belong to you by power or force.

The  colonization of  the African continent by the Europeans  marked the beginning of their expansion outside their continental boundaries.

The European attempts to colonize various parts of Africa certainly predate the late nineteenth century. In 1415 a Portuguese fleet and army conquered the Moroccan port of Ceuta.

In 1575 Paulo Dias de Novães founded the Portuguese colony of Angola in Loango through which Portugal funneled much of its trade with west central Africa. In 1652 the Dutch built a fort near the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa.
